I’m interested in using the Morel TM-4055 but I haven’t been able to find any reviews. I really think the design and my hope is that it would sound like a combination of a CAM-558 and a CAT-308 but the specs are different. Does anyone have experience with it? If so what did you use for a crossover?

Have a search for Paul Kittinger’s Cornetta, the crossover was done by Rich Craig and is matched to a 18w8531 in a MLTL enclosure.

This post has the crossovers from Rich Craig.

The first link Ugg10 provided in his reply is the cover page of my full write-up on the Cornetta, containing a detailed description, crossover schematic and its assembly layout, cabinet drawing with dimensions and lots of photos taken during the build. My direct email address is shown on that cover page, so if you're interested in receiving my write-up, drop me an email and I'll send it to you. I demonstrated the Cornetta at the 2019 InDIYana event and also entered it into PE's MWAF that year. Unfortunately it didn't win one of the top 3 competitions but there were several in the audience who heard them at InDIYana, thought they sounded quite good and should have been one of the winners. I'm using them every day in our main TV room.

Wow the Cornetta's look awesome – I'll checkout the writeup. This is a bit of an upgrade to an old set if fisher speakers that had been my dad's since the 70's - mostly for reasons of nostalgia. The cabinet is ~ 1.6 cf. I would like to use the TM-4055 with a 10" Dayton Audio RS270-8 – but I'm open to other recommendations. Parts express recommends a 1.38 cf cabinet - but once I add some rock wool I should be able to get close to that.

Looking at the RS270 frequency plots it starts to break up at around 1khz mark and a crossover around 5-600hz would be ideal, the TM4055 needs to be crossed no lower than 750hz by the looks of it so these are going to be difficult to match I think. The RS270 would be better matched to a conventional 4-5” mid range or full range (as a mid). The RS225 may be an easier woofer to work with for the TM4055 and many have used it successfully in three way designs plus I can be made to work in smaller boxes. Have a look at the various of Curt Campbell / Jim Holtz of Speaker Design Works (e.g. Finalist) and also the XRK971 RS225 / 10f WAW design on here.
Is the cabinet sealed or ported, if ported then the SB29NRX75-8 may be worth a look, break up is more benign and higher than the RS270 but it is more expensive, should work well in that size box with a decent amount of bass. The trick will be designing a good crossover as always.

The morel mid and tweeter combo is essentially an MDM55/CAM558 and MDT40/CAT308. The mod shouldn't be crossed lower than 800 Hz 2nd order, otherwise it runs out of steam and distortion goes sky high. I like the sound of the mid alot and it gels very well with the tweeter, which sounds a little laid back. Thats not a bad thing in some situations and compensates for modern treble happy, overly compressed music.

The Morel works and sounds just fine in my Cornetta crossed at 650 Hz with its appropriately designed crossover.
