Menards is putting the brakes on its plans to redevelop the Griffith Park Plaza shopping center that was long anchored by Kmart.
The Eau Clare, Wisconsin-based home improvement store bought the property at Cline Avenue and Ridge Road last year for $9.25 million. It tore down a wing of the outdoor mall that included Rainbow Shops, Food King China Buffet,a nail salon, an Armed Forces recruiting center andGriffith Park Cinema I-II, the last twin movie theater ever built in Northwest Indiana.
Menards is looking to relocate an older, smaller store at 6050 W. Ridge Road, Gary in the Ridge Plaza Shopping Center in unincorporated Calumet Township less than a mile and a half to the east of the site just off the Borman Expressway.
But it's not moving forward with any expansion projects at this time.
"We’re a privately owned and family-run company. The present economic and political situation in Washington is making us less enthusiastic about spending money on new developments at this time," Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott said. "We still hope to build a store on the Griffith property someday when things are more settled.”

Menards, which also has stores in Hammond, Schererville, Merrillville, Portage, Valparaiso and Michigan City, has plans to build a 200,00-square-foot home improvement store at the site. It canceled a plan commission meeting and has not done any work since demolishing one wing of the old shopping center.
Griffith is optimistic Menards willeventually resume the project, especially since the retailer has already invested around $10 million in the property, Griffith Town Council President Rick Ryfa said.
"They have 10 million reasons to move forward," he said.
The property has long been a shopping hub. It was previously home to the Ridge Road Drive-In, Venture, Service Merchandise and Kmart, which closed after it went bankrupt nationally in late 2018.
It's currently home to businesses likeJedi’s Garden, White Castle, Popeye’s, BMO Harris, E-Motor and the Avenue 912 music venue. Menards plans to relocate the existing Dollar Tree before razing the old Frank's Garden Center building along with the old Foot Locker and Kmart stores to clear the way for a new big-box store.
"Right now Menards isn't building new developments anywhere," Ryfa said. "They're waiting for the economic volatility to clear up."
He hopes Menards may move forward as soon as next year.
In the meantime, the town plans to make sure the long-vacant property does not appear blighted.
"We've had a frank discussion with Menards that the town will not tolerate a dilapidated or blighted property. We will enforce our ordinances and formulate citations and tickets as needed," he said. "Potential violations could be overgrown grass, the parking lot or the boarded-up Kmart. We will soon be aggressively enforcing our ordinances and fining them until the nuisance is dealt with. Our fines escalate with each infraction. We've been patient but won't mess around anymore. They have to follow every ordinance. In particular, we don't want to see boarded-up windows. We won't let that property rot and will fine and cite to ensure it doesn't."
The high-profile spot was long Griffith's biggest and busiest shopping center. It's been vacant for years mainly due to the legal fallout of the Kmart's bankruptcy but is a prime spot for redevelopment, Ryfa said.
"We've been frustrated. That property has had multiple owners over the years," Ryfa said. "We realize how huge and valuable it is. It's probably one of the best spots off the Borman between here and Porter County. We understand the value of the land and want to develop it as quickly as possible but we have no control over the situation. Menards owns the property."

Class UFC Gym in Winfield to celebrate grand opening with top contender Belal Muhammad
The Class UFC Gym in Winfield will have a grand opening Saturdaywith top welterweight UFC title contender Belal Muhammad.
Muhammad, a Chicago-based fighter with a 23-3 record in the mixed martial arts, will do a meet-and-greet and teach a class at the grand opening, which will take place from 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the gym at10660 Randolph St. in Winfield.
The high-end gym focuses on classes, specializing in boutique boxing conditioning, kickboxing and HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training. Manager Hannah Elliott said it's more akin to an Orange Theory than the boxing or mixed martial arts gym one might expect from the name.
"We use Myzone Fit Metrics, which track your workout and connect you to an app," she said. "It's like Orange Theory where they track you the same way and you burn the most calories and sweat the most when you're in the orange."
The owners also own the Class UFC Gym on Calumet Avenue in Munster. There also was an unaffiliated UFC Gym in Merrillville that closed.
"We are an affiliated class-based gym that's mostly focused on conditioning," she said. "There's also sparring. We hold classes for boxing, kickboxing and high interval cardio and strength classes. We have circuit training and one-on-one time with coaches."
Most classes run 60 minutes per session. People can get coached by active MMA fighters or trainers who help them reach their fitness goals, whether getting in shape, losing weight or recovering.
Classes run from 5:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays.
Class UFC Gym also has open gym times between 12 and 4 p.m. during the week. People can come in and work out outside of classes, such as by punching a heavy bag, rowing, cycling, lifting weights or practicing fundamentals. It has classes like Muay Thai, cycling and a coach's choice day on the weekend.
"You can get a day pass to come in and learn techniques and fundamentals," she said. "Our coaches will push you. There's no downtime. They push you hard and you feel accomplished. It's a good workout you feel for days. It will help you get in shape again. We focus on conditioning and fundamentals."
The grand opening event will have a taco truck, an ice cream vendor, a bounce house, a bakery, an artisan jewelry maker and fitness clothing for sale. It will feature a motorcycle club, balloon animals, Jersey Mike's and Muse Med Spa.
People will be able to buy sparring gloves and have Muhammad sign them. There will be discounted memberships and giveaways.
"It's an open house where people can come in to see how we operate," she said. "The facility itself is impressive and high-end. It will be an amazing experience."
Class UFC Gym offers monthly membership and multi-class passes. It gives discounts to teachers, first responders and veterans.
