Argentina. en route to Bound For Alaska Argentinian Drives Truck From Homeland To Longview By DONNA KNOX From the tip of South America to Fairbanks, Alaska, by motor vehicle is the itinerary of a 30-year-old Argentine mechanic who arrived in Longview this week. Carlos Palavecino is traveling in a 1941 army truck he bought for $200 and has converted into a camper. The exterior of the truck bears the names of companies which are helping him finance the trip through gifts of gasoline and truck parts. The truck has attracted considerable attention while it has been parked at Jose's Tamale Casa across from the R.

G. LeTourneau, plant. Palavecino's Longview stopover is the second in -which he has experienced language trouble. In Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken, he also had some difficulty. The journey is the culmination of a 15-year dream for Palavecino.

From the time he was 15 years old, he planned to see the world some day. FOR THIS reason, he explained, his family was happy that he was able to make it. Though he has encountered troubles along the way--including a truck accident which put him in a hospital for 18 dayshe says he has found good people everywhere. The poor, however, are more likely to offer assistance, he says. Palavecino completed his education at 19 and had additional industrial schooling.

He became proficient as a welder and after purchasing his $200 truck, he began outfitting it for his needs. In October of 1966, he began his journey from Buenos Aires to the tip of the continent. He returned to Buenos Aires, Dec. 20 after putting 5,000 miles of solo traveling behind him. Satisfied that his truck was equal to the rigors of a trip to Alaska, he headed out again on Jan.

3 to Uruguay. HIS SOUTH American journeys eventually took him to the Andean highlands of Peru and Bolivia, the highest mountains in the Western hemisphere. Llamas, Incas, jungle huts, modern cities- all have been a part of his adventures. And near the Iguaca Falls which lie between Paraguay and Brazil on a stretch of narrow land that is an appendage to Argentina, Palavecino's truck overturned after skidding. A doctor, who lived in Aristobulo del Valle, came to the accident scene and declared Palavecino dead.

But he was taken to a commissary and later transferred to a hospital 50 miles away. Besides the truck accident, Palavecino has been in three earthquakes during his. trip, including a very bad quake in Caracas in July of 1967. Many persons were killed in this earthquake and Palavecino has pictures of one five-story building which collapsed. At the time of the earthquake in Caracas and also of one less disastrous in Costa Rica, he was asleep.

THE COSTA Rica earthquake occurred in a small village. He looked out the window and, unable to see anything, went back to bed. The next morning a passerby informed him there had been an earthquake and one person was killed. Palavecino's favorite place thus far has been Venezuela. He thought Caracas beautiful and spent three months there working for General Motors.

Before he left, the company gave him a new motor for his truck and Goodyear provided him a new set of tires. From Caracas, the traveler took a three-day boat ride to the Canal Zone, the only portion of his trip which has not been made by land. Many stretches of the journey were made over lanes high in weeds. He is carefully writing his experiences, documenting those he feels require it, and mailing his log of the trip to his home in Buenos Aires. Thus far, his adventures have filled 1,500 pages.

IN OCTOBER, he entered Mexico and remained there through the winter working with Trailmobile De Mexico at Santa Clara. His passport to the United States is for six months and he headed for Longview because he had a letter of recommendation to H. F. Palavecino acquainted himself with traffic signs and the value of U.S. money by reading a booklet he carries with him. He has completed 50,000 miles on his journey and expects to spend some time in Longview.

Palavecino has already discovered he needs to know a little English. On his arrival here, he. sought someone, who spoke his language and stopped at the Taka-Taco restaurant. While parked there, a man who works for R. LeTourneau, stopped to look at his truck and discovered his dilemma.

THE MAN remembered that a new restaurant with a Spanish name had opened across from the LeTourneau plant and took Palavecino there. Luckily; the proprietor and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Jose Castello, both speak Spanish. The Castellos are from Shreveport and learned the language from their parents.

But the three can communicate and the Castellos have been interpreting for Palavecino. The visitor is a very good cook and has introduced some new Latin dishes to the Castellos. He also is familiar with the Argentine method of barbecuing and makes Said Castello of his cooking, "'He has shown me how to use some spices which I knew of but had never used. He has cooked pork chops topped with eggs and a Spanish sauce that is delicious. And I plan to try a cheese taco recipe he introduced to us." AFTER HIS Longview stopover, and a better knowledge of English, Palavecino will head across the United States to Canada and from here to Fairbanks.

His route across the U.S. will take in those cities where he Louisville, Toledo, Ohio; Detroit, South Bend, Chicago, Minneapolis, Fargo, S.D. On his return trip from Fairbanks, he will come down the West Coast and back to Laredo. From Laredo, he expects to drive straight home- a journey of four months--and plans to arrive at home in Buenos Aires in 1971. an.
